Overview

Designing Sleeper’s Free Entry Tutorial

As a product design intern at Sleeper, I focused on creating a Free Entry Tutorial for the PICKS game, a feature designed to teach players how to play while driving both engagement and business impact. The core challenge was balancing education and incentive: making the game easy and enjoyable to learn while encouraging users to complete the KYC (Know Your Customer), a critical metric for the ongoing success of PICKS.

This project became the centerpiece of my internship, allowing me to take ownership of the design process from exploration to execution, while collaborating closely with senior designers and cross-functional teammates. The result is a playthrough tutorial experience that not only helps users understand how to play PICKS, but also create a clear incentive to complete the KYC process.

  1. Spearheaded the design of an onboarding tutorial for a Daily Fantasy Sports product to improve key retention metrics and FTU experience.

  2. Designed and launched animations highlighting wallet and promo status features, reaching over 5 million monthly users.

  3. Conducted internal research and competitive audits to identify user challenges and map key flows for product enhancement.

Takeaways

Collaboration is constant

  • Working on a large design team meant daily collaboration with other designers, artists, and engineers. I learned how to share work early and often and adapt based on feedback.

Critique sharpens your work

  • With so many designers involved, my work was regularly critiqued, sometimes heavily. Instead of feeling discouraged, I learned to filter feedback, identify recurring themes, and use critique as a tool for growth rather than a setback.

The best designs feel invisible

  • Designing an onboarding tutorial led me to balance two needs, engagement and guidance, this pushed me to think more critically and ultimately become a stronger designer.
